At St. Bernardine of Siena Parish, we are proud to be named after one of the most influential saints in the history of the Church—St. Bernardine of Siena. Known for his deep love of God and his powerful preaching, St. Bernardine’s legacy continues to inspire and guide us in our faith journey.
Born in 1380 in Siena, Italy, Bernardine entered the Franciscan order at the age of 22. He was deeply moved by the needs of the poor and sought to live a life of simplicity and devotion. His dedication to God and his commitment to spreading the Gospel led him to become one of the most renowned preachers of his time.
St. Bernardine was especially known for his ability to speak to the hearts of the people. He traveled throughout Italy, delivering powerful sermons that called people to repentance, faith, and love for Christ. He was also a strong advocate for peace and was involved in the reconciliation of warring factions in Italy during his lifetime.
One of the most enduring aspects of St. Bernardine’s legacy is his promotion of the "IHS" symbol—the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in Greek. Bernardine used this monogram extensively, encouraging others to use it as a way to honor the name of Jesus and remind themselves of His presence in their lives. This symbol became one of the most widely recognized Christian emblems, and it continues to be used by the Church today.
St. Bernardine's zeal for spreading the Gospel and his commitment to Christ’s mission makes him an ideal patron for our parish. His example of humility, charity, and dedication to the Word of God inspires us to live out our faith with the same fervor. As we gather in worship and service, let us look to St. Bernardine for guidance, asking for his intercession to help us grow in holiness and live as true disciples of Christ.
St. Bernardine of Siena, pray for our parish, that we may continue to follow your example of devotion, humility, and love for Christ. Help us to spread the Good News to all people, just as you did in your time. May your legacy live on through our words and actions, bringing others closer to the love of God.
St. Bernardine, pray for us!
